Australia faces talent drought in key industries

The latest Skills Priority List (SPL) has revealed a talent shortage in 36% of assessed professions.

Compiled annually by Jobs and Skills Australia, the SPL shows that the most affected sectors are technicians and trade workers, along with professional roles in engineering, health, ICT and science. Shortages are particularly bad in regional and remote areas.

Over the last three years, skills shortages have escalated due to persistently tight labour market conditions. According to the SPL, these deficits could be caused by the lack of necessary technical skills or other qualities needed by employers. Another possibility is that people who have the required skills may not be applying for the vacancies under current pay and working conditions.

Occupations with significant gender imbalances, such as male-dominated trade-based roles, are particularly affected. Employers are responding to these challenges by restructuring, using migration programs and increasing recruitment efforts.
