Australia’s unemployment rate remained steady at 4.2% in August, with a small overall fall in employment offset by a shift from full-time to part-time work.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, employment decreased by 5,000 people, driven by a drop of 41,000 full-time roles. At the same time, part-time jobs rose by 36,000.
The shift shows a labour market adjusting rather than weakening. Hours worked fell 0.4% as more people moved to part-time schedules, yet underemployment eased to 5.7% – its lowest level in over a year. Combined with unemployment, the broader underutilisation rate edged below 10% for the first time since early 2020.
Participation also dipped slightly to 66.8%, hinting that some workers may have stepped back from job searching. Trend figures paint a similar picture of stability, with unemployment at 4.3% and participation steady at 66.9%.
