Weekly wages continue to increase

Average weekly ordinary time earnings for full-time adults rose 2.7% in the six months to November 2024, reaching $1,976.

According to new Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data, this growth was higher than the 1.8% recorded in the previous six-month period (to May 2024). It was also only slightly lower than the 2.8% seen in the second half of 2023.

Meanwhile, annual growth in the year to November 2024 remained high at 4.6%, equating to an extra $87 per week. ABS head of labour statistics Bjorn Jarvis said this growth in average earnings was the equal highest since May 2020, when lower-paying jobs were over-represented in job losses early in the pandemic.

“Before the pandemic, the last time it was 4.6% or higher was in May 2013.”

The data also revealed that average earnings growth was stronger in the private sector than in the public sector, with respective annual rises of 4.8% and 3.3%.
