Australia unveils first National AI Plan

The federal government has released its first National AI Plan, opting for voluntary transparency rather than strict regulations, while supporting wider uptake of AI.

Latest data shows about one‑third of SMEs already use AI, though adoption lags in regional areas with just 29% of regional businesses currently using it, compared with 40% in metro areas. This gap highlights a real opportunity for regional firms to catch up on digital tools that can boost efficiency.

Meanwhile, leading professional body CPA Australia is urging younger Australians to embrace AI, seeing it as a pathway to launching new businesses, driving innovation and strengthening the country’s economic future.

The plan backs investment in infrastructure, skills development and responsible AI use, aiming to make AI accessible and beneficial for businesses of all sizes.

For small businesses, especially those in regional areas, the plan creates a chance to level the playing field. Accessible AI tools can help streamline operations, fill skill gaps, improve decision-making and support long-term resilience.

With a national strategy now in place, businesses of all sizes and locations can benefit from the opportunities AI brings.
