Australia’s population is surging: it increased by 2.2% or 563,000 people in the year to March, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
From a business perspective, net overseas migration accounted for 81% of that growth, thanks to the increase in students and migrant workers. That means there are now a lot more migrants in the labour pool.
The Department of Home Affairs says businesses should follow this four-step process when hiring workers:
1. See if the person is an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or New Zealand citizen
2. See if they have a visa with work rights
3. Ensure the visa holder has a valid work visa while they work for your business
4. Provide the visa holder with the appropriate workplace rights and protections
