 The latest Skills Priority List (SPL) has revealed a talent shortage in 36% of assessed professions.

 Compiled annually by Jobs and Skills Australia, the SPL shows that the most affected sectors are technicians and trade workers, along with professional roles in engineering, health, ICT and science. Shortages are particularly bad in regional and remote areas.

Debt-stricken businesses risk damage to credit score

Businesses in debt with the Australian Tax Office (ATO) could be damaging their credit score. This was announced by the ATO as the organisation is about to notify credit bureaus of the debt of more than 9,000 businesses.

 The ATO says that as of July 2023 it has issued notices of intent to disclose business tax debts to more than 22,000 businesses with a tax debt of at least $100,000 that is overdue by more than 90 days.

Shifting job market may be helping small businesses

Are you finding it easier to find staff for your small business? You may not be alone. According to recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the job market has seen a notable shift. In August 2023, there were 390,000 job vacancies, a decrease of 38,000 from May 2023.

 The demand for workers eased for the fifth consecutive quarter, coinciding with a rise in the unemployment rate. However, the labour market remains tighter than pre-pandemic levels, with vacancies still 72% higher than February 2020.

Aussie SMEs hit financing wall amid tighter lending standards

Around half of Australia’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs) struggle to secure finance from traditional lenders with terms that suit their needs. According to the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) a recent survey of SMEs revealed that respondents believe banks have tightened lending standards, making it harder to get loans.

 Banks themselves have reported being more cautious lending to sectors that are more exposed to a slowing economy.

 The requirement to use residential property as collateral for loans has been a problem for SMEs for a while.
